Helen Keller was more than a passive figurehead that simply overcame her deafness and blindness--she spent her life fighting on behalf of the disabled, and when she realized the ties between poverty, bad working conditions, and disabilities, she fought hard and unpopular battles to improve working conditions and fight against socioeconomic inequality.
