Eddie Beckford, a Christian Vietnam veteran from New York City and his wife, Lura, a Jewish woman who has lived in Israel for many years, run a Chess Club, 'The King's Men', for the Russian holocaust survivors in Arad, southern Israel. The centre is also used to serve the Bedouin, Ethiopian Jews and other needy people in Arad - supplying free bibles, books and clothing - and is the only visible Messianic, or Christian, building in the town. As a result, the centre comes under intense opposition from ultra-Orthodox groups, who brand them as 'missionaries' - a very negative label in Israel.
