He made his professional debut for the club during the 2009–10 season, and also had loan spell in League One with Tranmere Rovers the same season. After 27 goals in 81 games for Watford in two-and-a-half years, Sordell earned a £3 million move to the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers in January 2012.
