Lloyd used Sidekick from HubSpot to help find speakers for his startup oriented conference. Once he secured enough speakers, he used their "brand" power to sell out the conference 45 days early. Lloyd used very careful and focused email outreach. He didn't use any form letters, but he also kept each hand crafted email short and easy to read. They were also really well researched. Emails dripped out informing the recipients of his progress. The first Traction Conference took place in Vancouver in June (2015). The 2nd conference will take place Oct 8th, 2015 in San Francisco.
