Yet for Paul, the Spirit is significant and central. He is the sign of our sonship—not works of the flesh (e.g., circumcision) but the searing of our hearts by his Spirit. This is not something we do. It's something Christ did at the moment we believed. The Spirit was "sent into our hearts" with a clarion cry. This made me wonder if we resort to works-based righteousness because we are unaware of the Spirit that God seared into us. We lack awareness of his searing and spiritual work.
