International aid agencies have warned that four months into the conflict in Sudan, the situation is spiralling out of control, with mass displacement and millions on the verge of famine. The heads of 20 global organizations said 14 million children (about twice the population of Arizona) needed humanitarian aid and more than four million people had fled their homes. They called on the warring parties to end the fighting and ensure safe access for the delivery of aid. The region of Darfur and the capital, Khartoum, have been plagued by clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
