The Federal Government may sell stakes in about 20 state-run companies to raise funds and improve governance in the entities. The chief executive officer at the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, Armstrong Takang says the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is among the firms the government may sell a stake in. He stated that the agency is considering options including strategic sales and initial public offerings and aims to implement the plan within 18 months. He noted that some of the entities need the private sector to take controlling shares and the major consideration for the government is to create value rather than retain control.

The ex-minister suggested runoffs for presidential polls where no candidate scores over 50% of the total votes cast. Chidoka says the votes got by President Bola Tinubu, then-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, put him in a serious minority that makes it difficult for him to push big agenda like petrol subsidy removal and the unification of the foreign exchange windows.

China has pledged to take resolute and forceful measures to protect its sovereignty after Taiwanese Vice President William Lai arrived in the United States on a brief visit. Lai, the frontrunner to be Taiwan’s next president at elections in January, is on his way to Paraguay to attend President-elect Santiago Pena’s inauguration and is scheduled to make a second stop in the US city of San Francisco on his way back to Taipei. China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has repeatedly denounced Lai’s trip. The army spokesman Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane says they had been gathering evidence against the deposed leader and what they claimed were his local and foreign accomplices. The head of a religious delegation of mediators said the head of the junta, Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani, was ready to consider a diplomatic solution with Ecowas. Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, the leader of Nigeria’s Izala Salafist Movement, says Gen Tchiani had said their doors were open to explore diplomacy and peace in resolving the matter.
