Google, Facebook, TikTok and other Big Tech companies operating in the European Union are facing one of the most far-reaching efforts to clean up what people encounter online. The first phase of the bloc’s groundbreaking new digital rules will take effect soon. The Digital Services Act which the biggest platforms must start following on Friday, is designed to keep users safe online and stop the spread of harmful content that is either illegal or violates a platform’s terms of service, such as the promotion of genocide or anorexia. Some online platforms, which could face billions in fines if they do not comply, have already started making changes.

Japan will start releasing treated radioactive water from the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean despite opposition from its neighbours. The decision comes weeks after the UN's nuclear watchdog approved the plan. Some 1.34 million tonnes of water - enough to fill 500 Olympic-size pools - have accumulated since the 2011 tsunami destroyed the plant. Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says the water will be released over 30 years after being filtered and diluted. The government says that releasing the water is a necessary step in the lengthy and costly process of decommissioning the plant.

South Africa’s electricity minister has raised concerns about the failure of municipalities to settle their bills with the state-owned power company, Eskom. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says that municipalities owed Eskom 63.2bn rand (£2.6bn). He says this erodes the bottom line of Eskom and means the company is not in a position to respond to the country’s electricity challenges. Mr Ramokgopa added that the debt had increased by 4.7bn rand over the past year. South Africa’s power crisis has been blamed on poor management and corruption.

The Economic Community of West African States has disproved claims of manipulation of external powers in its efforts to resolve the political instability in Niger Republic. ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah says foreign support is not part of the consideration of the West African body. The ambassador stated that even if force is used to remove the Junta, the countries showing support on the ground, including ECOWAS, will remain neutral and make independent decisions. He noted that ECOWAS has not given any consideration to the complexities of the nationals and multinationals who have given a foot on the ground.

The AU Peace and Security Council called on all of its member states and the international community to refrain from any action that could legitimise the junta in Niger. It reiterated calls for the coup leaders to release the elected President Mohamed Bazoum. The West African regional grouping Ecowas has already threatened military action to reinstate him.

The NCWS says one of the fallacies and misrepresentations of the law is that it legalizes abortion. The women’s group says the VAPP law which has been domesticated in the state is strictly a legal document that addresses violence against persons for both males and females. They urge the state government to disregard attempts to blackmail the VAPP Law but continue to support it by budgetary allocation towards full enforcement and implementation.
