  • ESSi

    10/03/2020

ESSi is a Brooklyn-based duo with a deceptively huge sound. Using a smart blend of noise and hooky post-punk to achieve mind-melting dynamics, Jessica Ackerley and Rick Daniel draw equally from ambient experimental music and pop as they do from the more unlistenable far reaches of skronk (though, thankfully, there’s a satisfyingly steady dose of that in the mix as well to shake things up). Their music rides the dark line between groove and caustic disorientation, in a way that’s welcome for its willingness to truly experiment with what can go into a song. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this super exciting session! Vital Creatures is available now from Ramp Local. 00:00 - Essi 00:27 - Pines And Cones 03:41 - Interview - ESSi 06:06 - Fly By 08:51 - Interview - ESSi 10:03 - I, I 11:59 - Interview - ESSi 14:35 - Their Way 17:08 - Interview - ESSi 18:24 - Marimba 21:30 - Interview - ESSi 24:21 - Outro 24:32 - Finish

The Joy Formidable is a Welsh alternative rock band currently based in London, whose dynamic songwriting and epic performances have made quite a mark over the band’s decade plus history. • Pom Pom Squad

    25/02/2020

Pom Pom Squad is the brainchild of musical force Mia Berrin. While the band’s name and imagery might evoke something fun and light, the reality is far darker and much, much heavier. Musically and lyrically, the project falls somewhere between 90’s Liz Phair and \ modern confessional indie rock like Soccer Mommy and Phoebe Bridgers, but with a good dose more punch in the heavy bits. The band brought their massive energy to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Pom Pom Squad’s debut album, Ow, is available now. 00:00 - Pom Pom Squad 00:34 - Heavy Heavy 03:15 - Interview - Pom Pom Squad 06:10 - Honey Suckle 09:19 - Interview - Pom Pom Squad 12:40 - Cherry Blossom 15:11 - Interview - Pom Pom Squad 19:27 - Again 24:41 - Interview - Pom Pom Squad 29:02 - Cut My Hair 32:14 - Outro 32:38 - Finish

Here, he presents a stripped-down taste of some of his newest tunes, accompanied by Alyson McNamara, at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn.
