All My Friends Are In Bar Bands

Synopsis

Across over ten years of going to shows, I've met countless fascinating people that are joined together by the fact I love their music. This is a medium in which I look to find out the bigger picture, the extended story and the journey that brought them to where they are. No genre or topic is off limits. I'm David James Young - and all my friends are in bar bands.

  • Episode 166: My Friends Phil Stack & Abby Dobson

    09/10/2020 Duration: 58min

Phil Stack has hauled his trusty double bass into just about every RSL, pub, club, theatre and arena you can think of. Abby Dobson has sung all the way from tiny restaurants in Europe to the open air of The Domain in Sydney. They've both managed to notch songs of theirs into the Australian psyche – Phil with “In the Summertime” as part of Thirsty Merc, Abby with “Even When I'm Sleeping” as part of Leonardo's Bride. After all these years, however, both still have an insatiable love of performing – indeed, it's what has brought them together for this very chat in the first place. Ahead of Phil's album launch show in Sydney – where Abby will support – the two spoke openly about lugging PAs, surviving grunge, Paris syndrome and how hindsight in 2020 is still 20/20. Catch Phil and Abby playing live at Mary's Underground in Sydney on Thursday October 15. • Episode 165: My Friend Fanny Lumsden

    02/10/2020 Duration: 51min

Fanny Lumsden is a household name - provided, of course, that your house is located at least 50kms or so from the nearest city. She's at the helm of the Country Halls tour, which has seen her perform from coast to coast and plenty of spots in-between alongside her husband Dan and their trusty caravan. Of course, that was until this year - Lumsden's plans for her third album Fallow were put on hold back in March, as were the world's. Fear not, though - from her scenic Tooma home, there were still plenty of stories to be shared across an unconventional, endearing career.  Thanks to Red Dirt Road Productions, Dan Stanley, Wally, El Davros and Paul McWhirter. • Episode 164: My Friends Knocked Loose

    03/09/2020 Duration: 38min

Knocked Loose are just what the Colonel ordered: A fresh batch of Kentucky-fried, scorched-earth, brutal-beatdown hardcore to throw bodies off stages to. The band's menacing and unrepentant approach to the genre has cemented them as heavyweights despite only being two albums and a handful of years in. Hell, even Corey Taylor has championed them as the future of heavy music. How did these southern boys send their trajectory skyward? Prior to a show in Newcastle with Jesus Piece, vocalist Bryan Garris and drummer Kevin "Pacsun" Kaine broke down their own personal musical histories and how they inevitably intertwined within a small town that they turned into a global village for hardcore. Thanks to Janine Morcos, Dallas Does PR, Mark Bawden, Ash Hull, Greg Bower, Destroy All Lines, the Cambridge Hotel and Paul McWhirter. • Episode 163: My Friend Kate Cooper (An Horse)

    28/08/2020 Duration: 35min

Growing up in the concrete slabs of the Gold Coast, you can't always get what you want. It wasn't until Kate Cooper moved up north to Brisbane that she was truly able to get some degree of satisfaction. A mid-2000s stint at the helm of Iron On turned her into one of the country's cult indie darlings, which blossomed to a global scale with her next band, An Horse. Things were very very good for awhile there, but things also got very very real. Cooper doesn't hold anything back in discussing the highs and lows of her career at the tail-end of a national An Horse tour back in late February. • Episode 162: My Friends RAT!Hammock

    13/08/2020 Duration: 51min

With a blend of psychedelia, pop, folk, jangle, indie, shoegaze and rock & roll, RAT!Hammock have assembled and curated a sound that is irresistible and wholly endearing. It's made them a lot of friends and fans along the way, which is always a plus - but this band, like most their age, started out with no loftier ambitions in mind. They're suburban kids, ranging from aspiring metalheads to baby Elvis impersonators. How exactly did they all end up in Brisbane, on a co-headlining tour with Horror My Friend and sold-out signs on the door? It's a long story. A fun one, too. Thankfully, there was some dude with a microphone there to document the entire thing. Thanks to Rad Management, the Black Bear Lodge and Paul McWhirter. • Episode 161: My Friends Starcrawler

    07/08/2020 Duration: 34min

Fresh out of rock & roll high school, LA's Starcrawler wasted little time in delivering their punchy blend of glam, punk and rock & roll to an unsuspecting but entirely appreciative audience. It's turned their late teens and early 20s into a dazzling melee of sold-out shows and jaw-dropping accomplishments, receiving recognition from industry giants like Dave Grohl and Sir Elton John along the way. In January 2020, Starcrawler came to Australia for the very first time. In-between shows, they took a half-hour of power out of their busy schedule to elaborate on how this slap-dash batch of wiry teen rockers evolved into one of their city's most talked-about rock bands. • Episode 160: My Friend Newton Faulkner

    24/07/2020 Duration: 43min

It wouldn't matter if Newton Faulkner had one hit or not - he'd still be a wonder. Whether it's his inventive and dizzying guitar playing or his stirring, emotive voice, Faulkner has remained one of the more charming and entertaining prospects of the singer-songwriter circuit - both in his native UK and abroad. He's spent most of the last decade working on his terms, outside of the structure of major labels and primarily touring with little more than a pedal board and his tour manager - who also happens to be his sister. What can we learn from the freewheelin' Newton Faulker? Quite a lot, as it turns out. From teenage punk bands to sold-out theatres, there's not much this ginger ninja hasn't done. Newton's new EP 'Chapter I - I Can Pretend' is out now via Battenberg Records. • Episode 159: My Friend Henry Wagons

    16/07/2020 Duration: 54min

Here he is. The mayor of Goodtown. The king at the top of the Tower of Song. The alt-country frontman's alt-country frontman. Better at bingo! Better at chess! He even beat you on the NAPLAN test! That's right folks, Henry fucking Wagons is here. In a Bar Bands first, we're speaking from hundreds of kilometres away - David in Wollongong, Henry in the wild west of Victoria. Don't think for a second that's gonna kill the vibe, though. What we have here is a conversation for the ages - we begin in the suburbs of Melbourne, we end up in a hotel room somewhere in Canada and we talk about just about everything that happened in-between. There's noise collectives! Country bands! Banter about Bob Dylan! What more could you want? Wagons new EP 'Need A Ride?' is out now via Spunk Records. • Episode 158: My Friends Obscura Hail

    25/06/2020 Duration: 51min

What started in a bedroom on the south coast of New South Wales has now spread its wings and traversed the country - singing songs, sharing stories and exploring a wide spectrum of musical ideas. Sean Conran was synonymous with Obscura Hail from his teens and well into his 20s before the moniker expanded to include other people. In 2019, this included bassist/vocalist Tamara Issa and drummer/percussionist Stevie West - and it was this line-up that created the project's most recent effort, the Zero EP. While on a national tour in support of it back in November 2019, the trio shared tales from across parks in Nowra, rough nights in Bendigo and crab shacks in outer-suburban Melbourne. • Episode 156: My Friends Cancer Bats

    29/05/2020 Duration: 47min

Canada's Cancer Bats never formed out of any grand ambitions to change the world - indeed, it began as little more than a side project for Liam Cormier and Scott Middleton. Even so, the next 15 years saw the riff-loving Canucks take their love of punk, hardcore and rock & roll to a global stage. No matter what has come their way, the band has made a point to never lose sight of their roots. They've also made a point of never losing their sense of humour - and this episode will happily testify to that. In October 2019, Cancer Bats ran ruckus on Bar Bands before a freezing-cold show with Totally Unicorn in the nation's capitol, Canberra. Cormier and bassist Jaye Schwarzer turned the podcast into their playhouse, while simultaneously offering up informative history of the early 2000s Canadian hardcore scene. • Episode 155: My Friends Crywank

    21/05/2020 Duration: 50min

There was never a universe in which such a strange band with such a strange sound and an unmentionable name would be successful. Except, of course, this one. A wholly DIY freak-folk expedition, Crywank have been streamed millions of times and faced a fervent cult fanbase wherever they would show their faces. How exactly did two working-class English punks make such a considerable dent? Vocalist/guitarist James Clayton and drummer Dan Watson (with special guest melodica player Joel Hernandez) offered up a guided tour before their last-ever Sydney show at the Red Rattler theatre towards the end of 2019. Expect ongoing tales of musical boxes, travel disasters and a testicular scare in the midst of an emotional rollercoaster. Yes, all of those stories are real. • Episode 154: My Friend Sasami

    02/04/2020 Duration: 28min

Sasami Ashworth grew up as a quiet achiever. She pursued music only on her own terms, and even when she ended up in a touring band it was as a side player. It's only in the last 18 months that Sasami has finally emerged in the spotlight as a singer-songwriter in her own right. Her debut self-titled album is a thing of vulnerability and resplendent indie-rock beauty, indebted to the likes of Liz Phair and The Breeders and yet quintessential enough to forge its own identity. In November 2019, Sasami arrived in Australia for her second visit and her first national support in support of Spacey Jane. Before a show in Wollongong, Ashworth (and perhaps a special guest) spoke openly about piano lessons, touring with Cherry Glazerr and meeting Debbie Harry. • Episode 153: My Friend Damian Abraham (Fucked Up, Turned Out a Punk et al.)

    20/03/2020 Duration: 35min

Damian Abraham never wanted to be in a band or be involved with music above simply appreciating it. Whatever happenstance allowed it to happen, however, the man who would later become known as Pink Eyes eventually evolved into one of the scene's most passionate creatives. Whether he's at the helm of Fucked Up, hosting his own podcast or sharing his love of wrestling and weed to a global audience, Damian lives and breathes what he loves. We spoke to the man himself while Fucked Up were touring Australia in October of 2019, discussing everything from Toronto hardcore, sustaining a band over 18 years and getting wailed in the balls at shows.Sliding Doors Turned Out a Punk Thanks to Samantha Clode, Frontier Touring, The Gasometer, Damian Abraham and Adam Buncher. • Episode 150: My Friend Amanda Palmer

    24/01/2020 Duration: 59min

Amanda Palmer has never been the kind of artist that bows to the status quo. Existing outside the conventions of rock, folk, punk and cabaret, she's been making music that provokes, intrigues and entertains for some 20 years now. Whether it's part of The Dresden Dolls, the Grand Theft Orchestra or under her own name, Palmer has always been creating and performing. It's not come without its controversies, but every setback has allowed her to grow, adapt and evolve. It's lead to her third solo album, , which is her most exhaustive and personal collection yet. In the midst of an extensive Australian tour, Palmer spoke at length about her origins as a child of the 80s and teen of the 90s, before kicking into the 21st century with a ferocity and unbridled ambition. There Will Be No Intermission Amanda will be on tour until the end of February.
