The Senators were dominant in the possession metrics all game, but Alex Lyon was the difference in this one once again. Lyon went 56/58 on the night including 12 saves on the PK. He joins some pretty good company as far as goaltenders to make 50+ saves in a single game. The Panthers flipped the scripts from their most recent matchup against the Senators. The game was filled with a lot of penalties early on where only 11:45 was spent at 5-on-5. Despite very little goals, it was a very high paced game where the Panthers were creating chances due to taking away shooting lanes and committed to blocking shots, which at times, led to rushes. The Panthers played mostly a 60 minute game. Panthers let a fluke goal less than 2 minutes into the game, but the Panthers were quick to respond to tie the game at 1 and took over from there. Panthers were not their sharpest on Wednesday against Toronto, but it was a 180 against Montreal when the team was committed to get their bodies in front of shot, help on the board battles and have clean breakouts. The new line of Luostarinen-Lundell-Tkachuk continues to buzz as Anton Lundell gets two goals on the night(3 goals in his last 2) and Matthew Tkachuk getting the hat trick on the night, his second as a Panther. Alex Lyon over the last 48 hours has stopped 56/60 shots(.933 save percentage) to help the Panthers get two big wins in Canada. The Panthers struggled with their breakouts and generating speed through the neutral zone through the first 30 minutes(did not generate their first shot of the 2nd until 10 minutes in, had 7 total through 30). The Panthers led 1-0 after the first minute, but it was nowhere near a comfortable lead. Panthers had G Alex Lyon between the pipes as Sergei Bobrovsky was scratched due to a Non-COVID Related Illness(Panthers called up Mack Guzda to back up Lyon). The Leafs were off and running living in the slot, getting in the passing lanes and making life on Alex Lyon difficult. Panthers went to the box 4 times, but were able to go perfect on the PK not getting out of position to give Toronto easy opportunities on Lyon. Panthers outscored Ottawa at 5-on-5 2-1, but taking penalties at the wrong time put the Panthers behind the 8-ball. It's another game where they trailed by multiple goals(happened twice on Monday night), and it happened right at the jump for Florida. It was another battle between the Tkachuk brothers with Brady taking this one with 2 points (1,1) on the night. Panthers may have gotten the SOG advantage, but both of their goals on Monday Night came from the point(Gus Forsling getting both goals), and even cut the game to one at one point with just over 10 minutes left in the 3rd. Florida on Saturday night got off to the fastest of starts just only allowing 3 SOG in the first period(1 at 5-on-5), but the last 40 minutes belonged to the New York Rangers as puck management was the issue for Florida. The Cats kept the big guns of New York off the scoresheet(that's if you don't count the own goal that was credited to Patrick Kane), but it was the kid line for the New York Rangers that the Panthers allowed to get going. The Panthers in the last 3 games have been great at killing penalties(only allowing 1 PPG); if it's the PK that has a stretch of playing well, then it's another issue that arises.
